Maple Class
Year 1 Maple Class
Welcome to Maple Class! This year will be packed full with engaging and exciting learning experiences to support the children’s transition into Key Stage One.
Phonics: Children will be continuing their journey using the Read Write Inc programme of study to learn the 42 phonic sounds. We will begin the year by recapping the phonics sounds learnt in Early Years, before progressing to set 2 and 3 sounds.
English: Building on the children’s knowledge of phonics, they will begin to build sentences and and look at a range of different genres, such as stories, poetry, instructions and information texts. We will use a range high quality texts to support our learning throughout the year.
Reading: Children should read every night and parents should then write a comment in their reading record. Your child’s book will be changed at school weekly.
P.E: Our P.E day is Thursday. Children will bring their P.E. kit to school to change into for their lesson.
P.E. kits should include suitable footwear (trainers or plimsolls), a white t-shirt and green or black shorts. In cold weather, children can wear green or black jogging bottoms and sweatshirts. Please make sure PE kit is fully labelled with your child’s name.
Homework: Weekly homework is set via Google Classroom on a Friday and due the following Thursday. This includes learning spelling words and using each one in a written sentence, practising phonics sounds and maths tasks or games. A Gospel Value homework will also be set half-termly and should also be shared via Google Classrooms.
Spellings: Spellings are handed out on Friday, in their spelling books and on Google Classroom. Children have one week to learn their spellings. They will be tested on these spellings the following Friday.
Should you have any other questions or concerns, or simply wish to discuss your child’s learning, please make an appointment to see me through the school office.
Best wishes,
Mrs O'Brien, Mrs Baker and Miss Vicky
