Chestnut Class
Year 4/5 Chestnut Class
Welcome to Chestnut Class! This will be an exciting year for you with interesting topics and some fantastic experiences to support your learning. Everything you will learn this year will set you on a path for success in the next step of your learning journey.
Here are a few pieces of information to help you on your way:
Reading:
Children are expected to read for 15 minutes each night and record it in their Reading Records with any new words they have learnt. Parents should be reading with their child once a week as well as signing their Reading Record each time they read independently. Children who are on the colour bands will continue to choose their books from school. Children who are free readers, can either choose their book from school or from home.
Spellings:
Spellings are uploaded to Google Classrooms on Fridays. Children will need to write a their spellings in a sentence as well as practising them at home. They will be tested on their spellings each Friday.
Time Tables:
Children in Year 4 and 5 are expected to know their times tables up to 12×12 – it is imperative that they have a confident understanding of this. Year 4 children will be completing the Multiplication Check in June 2023 to assess their times table knowledge. To support them with this, children have their own logins to Tables Table Blasts, which is an interactive and fun way to learn. We also share many different times table games and websites to help children become more confident with their times tables. They should be practising for at least half an hour each week and will be regularly tested in school to assess their progress.
Homework:
Children will be set weekly homework, which will include a list of 8 spellings for them to learn and to write in a sentence and a Maths worksheet. This will include fluency, reasoning and problem solving activities so children can practise their week’s learning at home. The worksheet will be accompanied with a video to support the children. Each half term, a Gospel Value homework will be set half-termly and should also be shared via Google Classrooms.
PE:
Children have PE on a Thursday morning and they will be learning a range of sports throughout the year. Children are expected to come to school in school uniform and bring PE kit to change into. Please ensure that PE kit is in line with our uniform policy. This includes a white t-shirt, black or green shorts or joggers and suitable foot wear (trainers or plimsolls).
