The subjects of History and Geography form the Humanities.
The aim of teaching these subjects is to stimulate the children to understand the world around them – whether from studying the lives of people who lived in the past or from examining our landscape, recycling and natural materials to map reading. We hope to develop a sense of chronological events and how they have impacted each other and helped create the world we live in today – cause and effect.
By investigating past events, children learn skills such as analysis, debate and interpretation as well as problem solving. By giving them a sense and an understanding of their past, it helps to give them a sense of personal responsibility, belonging and significance in our modern world.
Regular field trips to museum visits form part of our teaching which brings an added purpose and interest to these subjects. It is often these subjects which the Year 6’s remember with great clarity and fondness when looking back at their primary education.
